Research
The Education Department’s research covers both teaching and learning, with a focus on equity and improving educational outcomes for cultural and linguistic groups that have historically not been served well in our nation’s schools.
We’re known for our qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research. We take a socio-cultural approach, often eliciting the lived experiences of research participants through collaborative, participatory, and action-oriented research methods. Our faculty build research partnerships both within and beyond the university to produce cutting-edge, transformative projects that benefit educators and underserved youth.
Our department is committed to partnering with communities to envision, research, and design improvements in education for formal and informal settings. We lead numerous interdisciplinary projects that contribute to engaged scholarship on campus and in the local community. Our partnerships with schools and districts are helping to recreate teaching and learning in alignment with research, better enabling public schooling to achieve its promise in contributing to building a just democracy with communities of ethical, knowledgeable, engaged residents.
